CHICAGO: Gunman Opens Fire Near Massive Hyde Park Gathering, 3 Young Men Wounded As Police Search For Suspect

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — A large Memorial Day gathering in Hyde Park turned violent when a gunman opened fire near a crowd of more than 1,000 people, leaving three young men wounded and triggering a major police investigation. Authorities are still searching for the shooter as new details continue to emerge.

The shooting happened around 9:59 p.m. on May 25 near the intersection of South Cornell Avenue and East 55th Street, just a few blocks from Promontory Point and 57th Street Beach. The area had been packed for hours with large crowds gathering along the lakefront during the Memorial Day holiday. Reports indicated the crowd was so large that traffic on Lake Shore Drive was being affected before violence erupted.

According to Chicago police, three young men were standing outside when the suspect opened fire. An 18 year old suffered a gunshot wound to the right hand, while two 19 year olds were struck in the leg and hip. Two victims were transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, while the third victim arrived at the hospital on his own. All three were reported to be in good condition.

Investigators have not publicly announced a motive for the shooting. Police quickly released surveillance images of the suspected gunman and asked the public for help identifying him. Authorities described the suspect as a Black male believed to be between 16 and 19 years old. He was last seen wearing a black sweater with white writing on the sleeves, blue pants, black and white gym shoes, a black ski mask, and carrying a dark backpack.

The shooting occurred amid a much larger public safety incident unfolding across Hyde Park. Police had already been attempting to disperse a massive gathering of teenagers and young adults centered around 57th Street Beach. Videos from the area showed large crowds filling the streets, climbing on vehicles, fighting, and creating disturbances as officers worked to regain control.

Chicago police later announced that 53 people were arrested during the operation and nine weapons were recovered. Authorities said the weapons included firearms and other dangerous items seized throughout the evening. Charges ranged from disorderly conduct and reckless conduct to felony weapons offenses and battery charges. Many of those arrested were juveniles.

Local officials said police had received advance information that a large gathering was being organized through social media before Memorial Day. Additional officers from multiple police districts were deployed to the area, but the crowd still grew into the thousands before the situation escalated.

At this time, no arrest has been announced in connection with the shooting itself. Area One detectives continue to investigate and are asking anyone with information about the gunman to come forward.

The latest publicly available information indicates that the suspect remains at large and the three victims are expected to survive their injuries. No homicide charges or additional shooting-related arrests have been announced as of May 30, 2026.
